Protecting Your Personal Data Online

Aug 9, 2024

Our personal data is constantly exposed to various online risks. To protect this sensitive information, it is crucial to adopt strong security practices. Here are some practical tips to protect your personal data online.

1. Basic Best Practices

Basic cybersecurity practices are essential to protect against common threats.

  • Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid reusing the same passwords across multiple accounts.
  • When possible, add an extra layer of security by enabling 2FA on your accounts.
  • Be cautious with emails and messages containing links or attachments. Always verify the authenticity of the sender before clicking.

2. Secure Connections

Unsecured connections can be intercepted by hackers, exposing your personal data.

  • A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet connection, protecting your online activities from malicious interceptions.
  • Refrain from using public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive transactions. Prefer private and secure networks.
  • Ensure that the communication with the visited site is encrypted with a padlock icon (SSL).

3. Sharing on Social Media

Information you share on social media can be used by cybercriminals for phishing attempts, identity theft, or other scams.

  • Adjust your privacy settings. Limit access to your personal information to friends or trusted contacts. Regularly check your privacy settings.
  • Think Before Posting. Before sharing a post, check if it reveals too much information about you, such as your address, phone number, or financial details.
  • Beware of Scams. Professional companies will never ask for sensitive information via social media. Be cautious of messages or requests for personal information. No company will ask for your PIN or password.
  • Be cautious with question-answer games and quizzes. They can reveal sensitive information, such as answers to your bank account recovery questions or other services.

Protecting your personal data online requires constant vigilance and the application of good security practices. By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risks of identity theft and cybercrime.
